PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for employees involved in, inter alia, shift work, heavy-duty vehicle drivers, aircraft pilots and any other stressful situations. It will assist individuals to understand the physiological and psychological effects of fatigue.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the causes of fatigue.
  • Demonstrating an understanding the prevention of fatigue.
  • Applying methods to deal with fatigue in the workplace.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the causes of fatigue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The fundamental anatomy and function of the endocrine system is explained in relation to the causes of fatigue. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fundamental anatomy includes, but is not limited to, brain, digestive system and renal system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of specific medical conditions and prescribed medication on state of alertness of the individual are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Medical conditions include but are not limited to diabetes, hypertension, sleep and ageing, women and sleep, anaemia, depression, anxiety, irritability, chronic pain and infections.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of alcohol, caffeine and illegal substances on the brain are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Environmental conditions are described in relation to occupational health and safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Environmental conditions include, but are not limited to, workplace, shift work, type of work, over-time, work culture, noise, heat and personal circumstances.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The signs and symptoms of progressive fatigue are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the prevention of fatigue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of eating regular, healthy and well-balanced meals is described in terms of according to the type of work performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevance of regular exercise and relaxation is explained and the consequences of non-compliance are indicated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need for sleep and the effect of chronic sleep interruption on the body are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects on sleep include, but are not limited to, biological clock, circadian rhythm, sleeping patterns, quality and quantity of sleep, aging and sleep, women and sleep.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply methods to deal with fatigue in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fitness for work of the employee according to personal appearance is described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fitness for work includes, but is not limited to, alertness, presence of physical conditions with and without medical treatment, psychological strain, napping, rest and 'Mondayitis'.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Self-management of a healthy life-style is discussed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Healthy self-management includes, but is not limited to, nutrition, type of meals, number of meals, ways to boost physical and mental energy, vitamin supplementation, exercise, correct sleeping habits, social conditions, and home life.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need for referral of a fatigued employee is discussed according to company policy and procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Company policy and procedures include, but are not limited to, employee assistance programmes, medical examinations, adjustment to shift work.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in place with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
