Learners credited with this unit standard are able to: The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation. This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.
This unit standard applies to persons laser shaping standard fancy cut shapes under minimal supervision. This does not require the operator to write their own programs for shaping unconventional-shaped diamond gemstones. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The equipment to be used is checked to ensure it is clean and ready for use. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Stones received are checked to ensure that they are set in an appropriately sized pot at the correct depth and angle for laser shaping. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The set diamond gemstone is located in the equipment and correctly aligned in the jig. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The diamond gemstone is measured using a reference cycle before application of a cutting beam. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The program for the desired shape to be made is selected. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 |
The programmed shape is checked against the Marker's line to ensure that it is correctly aligned. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 |
The outline of the shape is manually marked on the diamond gemstone and the stone is referred to the Marker for instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Manually marked must include:
|
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Shape diamond gemstones by laser cutting. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The laser beam is focussed above the stone before opening the shutter. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. |
