PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for community workers who are required to give basic support and assistance to clients with common respiratory problems such as Tuberculosis, asthma and cardiac conditions. It will enable the learner to keep a person with these conditions calm and restrict their movement to ensure wellbeing.

The most common causes of breathing problems in the learner's own community are specified. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Common causes include, but are not limited to, Tuberculosis, asthma, allergies, smoking. |

Persons with breathing problems are identified and referred for medical attention. |

Serious breathing problems are identified by the type of breathing, possible loss of consciousness, appearance of ribs and nostrils, skin colour - especially around mouth and nose. |

The means to get a person with serious breathing problems to a doctor or hospital urgently are identified and utilised in emergency situations. |
