PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people in the automotive industry engineering who are expected to check the condition of vehicle components.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare to test vehicle components.
  • Perform a visual inspection.
  • Perform an operational test.
  • Apply safety procedures during the testing process.
  • Restore work area, complete and process documentation.

    This unit standard may be used in the context of one or more of the following areas of specialisation:
  • Passenger vehicle.
  • Commercial vehicle.
  • Earthmoving equipment.
  • Lift truck.
  • Motor cycle. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • The ability to work safely in an automotive workshop at NQF Level 2.
  • The ability to use automotive engineering tools and equipment at NQF Level 2.
  • The ability to understand the basic operation of engines at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Engines include multi cylinder 2 and 4 stroke diesel and petrol engines with an engine capacity of not less than 1300cc.
  • Vehicle components include any contraption, consisting of more than one part working together, and forms part of any one or more of the following systems:
    > Electrical.
    > Power train (engine).
    > Drive train.
    > Brakes.
    > Hydraulics.
    > Pneumatics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component to be tested is identified from given documentation and workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes job cards, customer requests and manufacturer service schedules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All tools and equipment required to perform the task are prepared for use and ensured to be available prior to commencing with the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Replacement parts required are confirmed to be available prior to commencing with the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of continuing with the task when all requirements are not available are described in terms of productivity and utilisation of workshop space.

    The vehicle is made safe to work on in accordance with vehicle manufacturer specifications.

    Lubrication, coolant, and fuel leaks are identified and reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace requirements.

    The serviceability of lubricants and filters are determined in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Loose components are identified and reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace requirements.

    Damaged or broken components are identified and repaired or replaced in accordance with workplace requirements.

    The test is carried out according to vehicle manufacturer specifications.

  • Safety includes using personal protective equipment, adhering to workshop manual warnings and disposing of hazardous materials.

    All safety warnings and required actions before, during and after component removal and fitting are adhered to according to workshop safety manuals.

    Applicable SHE procedures are followed throughout the work process.

    Restore work area, complete and process documentation.

  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away, work area cleaned.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
