PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate how human factors impact on the way people in the aviation environment perform their tasks and fulfill their responsibilities. They will have acquired knowledge of: general human factors; physiology and the effects of flight; factors affecting performance; human performance and limitations and social psychology within an aviation context.

    The concept of human factors is explained to show its importance in the field of aviation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Human factors, models and programmes are defined and described in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Incidents in aviation are identified and described in terms of how they are attributable to the impact of human factors. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how flight affects human physiology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of flight on circulation and the respiratory systems is described in accordance with health guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health aspects either induced or made worse by flight are defined and described in terms of the effects of flight on the human body. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to hypoxia, hyperventilation, entrapped gases, motion sickness and decompression sickness.

    The changes to vision and visual perception and hearing and balance are described in terms of the effects of flight on the human body.

    The impact of flight on spatial orientation is defined and described in accordance with industry standards.

    Flight anxiety is explained and described in accordance with industry standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of medical fitness and health in the performance of the individual in the workplace is described to show their importance as human factors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of alcohol, medication and drugs on work performance are discussed with a view to assist individuals to deal with these challenges and improve work performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The pressures of stress, workload, lack of sleep and fatigue are discussed in terms of how they contribute to diminished work performance within the aviation support sector. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Workload includes overload, underload, physical work, repetitive tasks.

    Environmental hazards present in the aviation environment are described and discussed in order to avoid/prevent them.

    Peer pressure is discussed to show its influence on people and in the workplace.

    The concepts of management supervision and leadership are discussed within the context of a changing workplaces. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
