PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable the learner to begin to apply basic transcription techniques. This unit standard will further enable the learner to apply advanced aural and musical listening techniques to transcribe musical pieces. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for developing competencies to practice as a professional in the field.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identifying and constructing intervals.
  • Identifying and interpreting chords.
  • Identifying and practising common diatonic chord progressions.
  • Demonstrating melodic dictation and singing in any standard notation.
  • Demonstrating rhythmic dictation and clapping of rhythms.
  • Formulating basic lead sheet transcription for three pieces.

  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and construct intervals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major and minor common intervals are identified and sung in any notation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to intervals of 1st-10th.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Intervals are inverted and identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Interval relationship is compared in the sections of specified musical pieces. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and interpret chords. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between chords and their respective inversions are recognised once they have been played as specified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Chords at this level include major7, minor7, dominant7, augmented7, diminished7, half diminished 7 and minor major 7.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chords are sung in all their inversions as specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chord tone constructions are demonstrated by writing them down as specified. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and practise common diatonic chord progressions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Semi-professional chord progressions are found and identified in a specified composition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Roman numerals are understood and formulated as specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chord progressions are recognised when played in any inversion specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Twelve bar melodies are composed demonstrating the use and application of Roman numeral. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate melodic dictation and singing in any standard notation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A twelve bar melody is sight read by singing it in any standard notation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to the following:
  • Exercises should be conducted in Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian modes: note values of a Semi breve, minim, crotchet, quavers in the keys of C, G, D, A, F, Eb, Ab and Bb major should be used.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Melodies are sung and accompanied by learners on instruments. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to:
  • Un-tuned percussion students should perform these exercises on keyboard.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A twelve bar melody is dictated after it is played 3 times. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • Note values of a Semi breve, minim, crotchet, quavers and semi quavers in the keys of C, G, D, A, F, Eb, Ab and Bb major should be used.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A metronome is used to dictate melodies as required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to 75 bpm.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate rhythmic dictation and clapping of rhythms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A twelve bar rhythm is sight read by clapping it after studying it for a short time. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • Note values of a semi breve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semi quaver and semi quaver triplets.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Rhythmic exercises are clapped and counted out loudly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A twelve bar rhythm is dictated after it is played three times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A metronome is used to dictate melodies as required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to 75 bpm.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Formulate basic lead sheet transcription for three pieces.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A song is listened to and sections labelled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quantity of bars allocated is according to the song sections. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The form of the song is written down in the shortest, most musical bar format. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Repeat sign, 1st time, 2nd time bars, D.C, D.S, D.S al Coda should be applied where needed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Entire pieces are transcribed, demonstrating the use of appropriate melodies and rhythms.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 6 competency in the field.
