PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to produce jewellery using the lost wax casting technique.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Make rubber moulds of metal models.
  • Produce wax patterns for investment.
  • Invest and cast patterns in metal.
  • Remove and finish the metal reproduction.

    Make rubber moulds of metal models.

    Tools, materials and equipment are selected in accordance with specified requirements.

    The mould is vulcanized according to task specific requirements.

    The model is positioned in the vulcanizing frame to ensure effective injection.

    The model is removed from the mould without damage to the model or the mould.

    The wax is injected or poured in a way that minimises wastage according to operational requirements.

    The wax pattern is removed successfully from the mould in line with jewellery manufacturing standards.

    The wax pattern is free from defects in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements.

    The wax pattern is secured and gated in a way that ensures a successful cast, and is ready for investment according to task specific requirements.

    The consequences of poor workmanship, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Tools, materials and equipment are selected in accordance with specified requirements.

    Investment and burnout procedures are followed according to product specifications.

    The correct amount of alloy is melted to the required temperature and cast to fill the mould cavity in terms of casting quality standards.

    The casting is free from defects in terms of sound jewellery manufacturing requirements.

    The consequences of poor workmanship, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on Occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    This unit standard replaces unit standard 15273, "Reproduce a piece of jewellery using the lost wax casting technique", Level 2, 6 credits.

  • Gating: This means to build a wax tree.
  • Wax tree: A number of wax patterns attached to a central wax stem, ready for investing.
  • Investing: Pouring investment slurry into a metal flask, covering the wax tree.
  • Wax pattern: A wax copy of the original metal object.
  • Vulcanizing: Curing of rubber using heat and pressure.
