PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The unit standard forms part of the core learning for any study in music. It will entrench the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to any career in the music industry.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Deriving advanced notation.
  • Constructing and applying scales within keys.
  • Analysing and constructing chords and chord progressions.
  • Understanding and memorising music related terminologies.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Derive advanced notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The notations for clefs are recognised and compared according to internationally used notations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Clefs include treble, bass, alto and tenor.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Half note values are recognised. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Values (half or double) include rests and time signatures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Double note values are recognised and rewritten. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Melodies are transposed to different keys, clefs and values. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Construct and apply scales within keys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All major and minor key signatures are constructed and applied for alto and tenor clefs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All major, minor harmonic minor, melodic and Gregorian modes are constructed for tenor and alto clefs (ascending and descending). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All major and minor pentatonic scales are constructed for treble and bass clefs (ascending and descending). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All Harmonic and melodic chromatic scales are constructed for treble and bass clefs (for all keys). 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse and construct chords and chord progressions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The construction of all major, minor, augmented, half-diminished, diminished, dominant and suspended fourth quartads for all four clefs is illustrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quartad diatonic system for the major scale are illustrated and applied for all twelve keys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quartad diatonic system for the minor scale for all twelve keys are illustrated and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The Roman numeral formulae for the imperfect cadence is memorised and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All pre-cadence chords for the perfect, imperfect, plagal and deceptive are identified and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Voice leading for any quartad chord progression is applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Diatonic chord progressions are analysed for cadence patterns, secondary and extended dominants and dual function chords.

    Understand and memorise music related terminologies.

    Music terminologies include doppio movimento, expressione, martellato, incalzando, tremolo, vibrato, vigoroso, con forza, atonality, polytonality, opus moto, mancando, allegro, confuoco, brilliante, capriccioso, come prima, come supra and delicate.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
