PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Wildlife rehabilitation centres are common and it may be necessary for animal protection inspectors to have to inspect such a facility. It is therefore imperative that they have a basic understanding of the types of rehabilitation centres, the types of animals that the centre rehabilitates, basic principles of rehabilitation, rehabilitation protocols as well as knowledge of hygiene and relevant treatment most often given at these centres.

This unit standard addresses these needs, and learners credited with it will be able to:
  • Identify the need for wildlife rehabilitation and the different kinds of facilities.
  • Identify relevant legislation regarding wildlife rehabilitation.
  • Identify types of wildlife most commonly admitted to wildlife rehabilitation centres.
  • Demonstrate awareness of welfare concerns, basic hygiene and medical protocols within wildlife rehabilitation centres.
  • Evaluate the different release protocols at wildlife rehabilitation centres.

    Areas of hygiene concern within a wildlife rehabilitation centre are identified and explained in terms of transmission of disease.

    Basic procedures and treatments most commonly encountered at a wildlife rehabilitation centre are identified for specific species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Examples of welfare issues commonly encountered with wild animals undergoing rehabilitation are given for specific species.

    Evaluate the different release protocols at wildlife rehabilitation centres.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of pre-release assessments of animals is explained in terms of ensuring maximum survival in the wild. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre and post release protocols are explained for the different types of animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need for post-release monitoring is explained in terms of improving overall rehabilitation.

  • Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.

  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
