Inspectors need to be capable of evaluating if the welfare of animals at a grooming parlour is ensured. The unit standard reflects this need, and learners credited with it will be able to:
  • Record observations and important details about the facility.
  • Evaluate the condition and use of equipment.
  • Evaluate the suitability of transport facilities.
  • Assess the handling techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information regarding the owner and emergency details of the facility is obtained in accordance with accepted protocols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Areas of concern are identified and recorded in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant action is taken on areas of concern. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate the condition and use of equipment and holding facilities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is inspected for condition to ensure that the animals' welfare is not compromised. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes, but is not limited to clippers, baths, dryers and brushes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cages for holding and transport are inspected for condition to ensure that the animals' welfare is not compromised.

    The manner in which equipment is used is evaluated to ensure that the animals' welfare is not compromised.

    Evaluate the suitability of transport facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The suitability of the transport vehicle is assessed in terms of its applicability for the types of animals transported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The competency of the vehicle operator is evaluated including his/her animal handling techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The condition and type of cages for transport are inspected to ensure that the animals' welfare is not compromised.

    Monitor handling, bathing and drying techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bathing techniques are evaluated for compliance to acceptable practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but not limited to water temperature, depth and types of shampoo.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Drying techniques are evaluated for compliance to acceptable practices.

    Includes but not limited to temperature of dryer, method of combing and restraint techniques.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Any signs of sedation or unacceptable methods of restraint of animals is identified and recorded in accordance with organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.
  • Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
