PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Groups of cats may be found living in such places as factory sites, dockyards, hospital grounds, public parks and the gardens of private houses. Previously owned, these cats are stray, lost or abandoned and they and their offspring are almost always shy of people and difficult to handle. Persons working in the field of animal welfare should know how to assist these colonies in a humane manner, with long-term results.

The unit standard reflects this need, and learners credited with it will be able to:
  • Assess the extent of the problem and identify relevant action.
  • Explain humane trapping methods and the care, use and control of traps.
  • Undertake a colony control scheme.

    Methods of feral cat colony eradication programmes that have proven to not be successful in the long term are listed and explained focusing on why they did not work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods of feral cat colony programmes that have proven to have long term success are explained focusing on what factors led to their success. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The extent of a feral cat problem is determined from given information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A plan of action is outlined, focusing on the roles of the various participants. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain humane trapping methods and the care, use and control of traps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    Acceptable trapping methods are described with an explanation of why they are acceptable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The control of cat traps is explained in terms of its importance in handling the situation.

    Treatment and care of the cat whilst in the trap is described in terms of accepted humane treatment.

    Undertake a colony control scheme.

    The colony is assessed and the affected public informed about feral cats. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Care givers are identified in accordance with organisational requirements and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A veterinarian is sourced and volunteers are prepared in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cats are humanely trapped. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Cats are selected for sterilisation or euthanasia in accordance with accepted protocols.

    Assess and maintain the colony to ensure success.

    Cats are released back into the colony after acceptable recovery.
