PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

When animal protection personnel are working with different animals often in emergency or dangerous situations, there is a need for an understanding of the basic safety for humans and animals of commonly used equipment.

This unit standard addresses these needs, and learners credited with it will:

Identify animal handling equipment and its use.

Identify commonly used emergency euthanasia equipment.

Explain the use of basic temporary containment barriers and traffic equipment.

Explain maintenance of equipment and the need to keep records.

The necessary maintenance requirements for the different types of equipment are identified and described according to manufacturer specifications.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Documentation used to record the use of equipment, declare indemnity and other relevant forms are identified and explained in terms of their purpose and method of completion.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The importance of keeping records is describe for tracking actions and ensuring correct maintenance of equipment according to manufacturer specifications.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical:

Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.

Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.

Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.

Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
