Inspectors need to be capable of evaluating the physiological condition and the donkeys' sense of well-being. They also need the ability to recognise possible cruelty offences and take appropriate action.

The unit standard reflects this need, and learners credited with it will be able to:
  • Distinguish the physiology of a donkey from other animals.
  • Identify physiological parameters of a healthy donkey and common diseases or ailments.
  • Define humane and correct handling techniques and behavioural problems of donkeys.
  • Describe equipment used on or attached to a traction animal, the maintenance thereof and potential welfare concerns.
  • Explain the uses of working donkeys and their welfare needs.
  • Describe legislation relating to the use and care of donkeys explained.

    Hitching methods are explained in terms of their approach and results.

    Maintenance requirements of carts and implements are described in terms of preventive maintenance as well as the alterations which should be made to currently used carts.

    Equipment used for handling and restraining a donkey is identified and described in terms of how it works.

    Includes the correct techniques for hobbling a donkey.

    Assessment of this unit standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors and moderators must be registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard or have at least 5 years relevant practical experience.
  • Training providers must be accredited by a relevant ETQA.
