PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of building and civil construction. Learners should be able to perform duties in preparing and lay precast block paving.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Select materials, tools and equipment to perform specified precast block paving work.
  • Cut edges of precast block paving according to specification.
  • Mix filler, substrate layer and bedding materials for precast block paving.
  • Lay precast block paving according to specification.
  • Implement emergency safety procedures when required.

  • Gravel materials: Natural gravels and in-situ materials.
  • Bedding materials: Commercial graded sands, and washed river aggregates.
  • Compaction of substrate must include cement stabilisation.
  • Precast pavers: Clay and concrete pavers in various thicknesses and shapes, including interlocking, square, and rectangular units.
  • Cutting of edges: Various/different methods of cutting, grinding, and guillotining.
  • Gap filling: Concrete, mortar, fine sand with or without cement.
  • Compaction of paving: Use of vibrating plate or drum rollers.

    Properties, purposes and applications of materials, tools and equipment are described accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials, tools and equipment are selected to be fit-for-purpose and suitable for specified tasks/applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Materials, tools and equipment are checked against specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The estimation of material quantities is done correctly. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Cut edges of precast block paving according to specification. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Cutting of edges includes but is not limited to cutting, grinding, and guillotining methods/techniques.
  • Objects include but are not limited to trees and flower beds.

    Edge block pavers are cut (or broken) to specification and in accordance with specific work plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cuts around objects are cleaned for neatness. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Mix filler, substrate layer and bedding materials for precast block paving. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Bedding material can include commercial graded sands and washed river aggregates, fillers include concrete, mortar and fine sand with and/or without cement.

    Fillers, substrate layers and bedding materials are identified correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fillers, substrate layers and bedding materials are chosen to meet the requirements of prescribed tasks and specifications.

    Lay precast block paving. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Compaction of substrate includes cement stabilisation and use of vibrating plate or drum rollers.

    Prescribed procedures during emergencies are promptly followed when required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Injuries are reported promptly to all persons concerned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Adherence to specified procedures for reporting and recording injuries is demonstrated during an emergency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Specified procedures to be followed during an emergency are demonstrated to avoid injuries that may lead to a claim in terms of the Workmen's Compensation Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Incident reports are written and delivered to relevant authorities in accordance with specified procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
