PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to provide technical personnel with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to perform routine maintenance, repairs, pre-trip inspection procedures and standard modifications on specialised marine refrigerated containers.

Learners competent in this unit standard are able to:
  • Inspect specialised marine refrigerated container system.
  • Repair specialised marine refrigerated container system.
  • Carry out a pre trip inspection procedure for specialised marine refrigerated containers.
  • Carry out cold treatment procedures on a marine refrigerated container.
  • Conduct manufacturer-specified modifications and/or upgrades on a specialised marine refrigerated container.
  • Carry out the generator set pre trip inspection procedure.
  • Conduct off-hire surveys on a marine refrigerated container. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already achieved and is therefore competent in the following:
  • Communication, mathematics and relevant science and technology at NQF Level 3.
  • Carry out fault finding and repair procedures on non-specialised marine container refrigeration systems at NQF Level 3.
  • Carry out fault finding and repair procedures on non-specialised marine container circuits and controls systems at NQF Level 3.
  • Carry out a Pre Trip Inspection (PTI) inspection of non-specialised marine containers at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range, as indicated under the specific outcomes, determines the scope and level of this unit standard.

    However, for the purpose of assessment:
  • The Perishable Products Export Control Board's (PPECB's), Cold Chain Handling Protocols and standards are to be used and take precedent.
  • Specialised marine refrigerated containers include: Controlled-Atmosphere and Super Freezer types.
  • Marine refrigerated container and refrigeration system manufacturers' manuals and procedures are used and adhered to where appropriate.
  • Employer/Client standard operating procedures are used.

    "Environmental" includes, but is not limited to, maritime applications.

    The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision and according to worksite and manufacturer specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    Air distribution/ventilation system components are analysed for faults and repaired in accordance with standard operating procedures and guidelines and manufacturers specifications.

    The "self diagnostic test" procedure results are obtained, analysed, and explained.

    The post "self diagnostic test" repairs and checks are explained and carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures and guidelines.

    The Perishable Products Export Control Board's (PPECB) cold treatment protocols are stated and the procedures and inspection requirements are explained and demonstrated in terms of the PPEC Act of 1983 or current replacement legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Employer/Client/PPECB standards, procedures, and protocols are implemented and adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe working practices are explained, implemented, and adhered to in terms of the Safety Regulations and standards of safety as specified in terms of industry standards.

    The documentation for a modification or upgrade is obtained, analysed, and the procedure for its application is explained correctly in terms of manufacturers guidelines and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Employer/Client/Manufactures standards and guidelines regarding authorisation procedures are identified and adhered to in terms of company policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The modification or upgrade is verified against the authorisation documentation by paying particular attention to manufacturers specifications, design intentions, functionality and standard quality assurance procedures.

    Employer/Client/Manufactures standards and guidelines regarding modification/upgrade procedures, replacement of parts, and repairs are explained and adhered to.
