PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to provide non technical personnel with an all round understanding of marine refrigerated containers and their application, enabling them to perform specific marine refrigerated container inspection procedures and container processing related tasks.

Learners competent in this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain and discuss perishable product storage requirements.
  • Describe the processing path of a refrigerated container through a depot.
  • Identify various types of marine refrigerated containers and explain their purpose.
  • Explain and discuss the operating principles of marine refrigerated containers.
  • Use marine refrigerated container instrumentation.
  • Prepare and present a refrigerated container for inspection. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already achieved and is therefore competent in the following:
  • Communication skills, at NQF Level 2.
  • Ability to understand and complete documentation and the recording of data, at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematics addition and subtraction skills, at NQF Level 2.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

    Credits may be obtained by applying to an accredited/approved training provider/institution in order to have prior learning recognised in lieu of past work experience. Past experience must relate to the specific outcomes contained within this unit standard. The ensuing assessment of candidates seeking recognition of prior learning should not be so onerous as to deter them from doing so. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    However, for the purpose of assessment the following applies:
  • The Cold Chain Handling Protocols (PPECB ) and standards are to be used.
  • Marine refrigerated containers include, but are not limited to, "0ºC only", "above and below 0º", Controlled Atmosphere, Cold Treatment Protocol Containers and Super Freezers.
  • Refrigeration systems and controls used may originate from any recognized manufacturer (OEM).
  • Employer/client standard operating procedures are to be used.

    Environment contexts include, but are not limited to, the transport sector. The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision and according to worksite and manufacturer specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cold storage principles are explained according to procedures for the hygienic and safe operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems, quality, food safety, manufacturer specifications and customer and enterprise requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for PPECB Cold Chain Handling Protocols are explained according to regulatory requirements and the legislation/insurance and security aspects of the transportation of produce and material across international waters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for specialized cargo handling protocols are explained in terms of regulatory requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the processing path of a refrigerated container through a depot. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sequence of procedures from entry, to the exit of the depot is explained according to Employer/Client standard operating procedures and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic tasks performed on the container at each station are explained in terms of Employer/Client standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The points in the sequence that require PPECB inspections are indicated and explained according to Employer/Client standard operating procedures, requirements and regulatory practices. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify various types of marine refrigerated containers and explain their purpose.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main marine refrigerated containers components are identified using industry terminology and the functions of these components are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic exterior, interior construction and structural components are identified and their function explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marine refrigerated containers include, but are not limited to, "0ºC only", "above and below 0º", Controlled Atmosphere, Cold Treatment Protocol Containers and Super Freezers. (With their own units; Pre-chilled; Liquid nitrogen systems).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The variations between normal and specialized types of marine refrigerated containers are explained in relation to their designed application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different types of marine refrigerated containers are identified and their distinct characteristics are described, by stating their main operating principles.

    Explain and discuss the operating principles of marine refrigerated containers.

    The basic heat transfer cycle of the refrigeration system is explained according to science and technology principles.

    The basic air distribution and ventilation systems are explained in terms of manufacturers' design principles and their application in marine refrigeration containers are discussed.

    The principles of specialised container systems are explained and understood.

    The purpose of controlling and monitoring instrumentation is explained in terms of perishable product storage regulations.

    The various types of third party inspections are explained in terms of PPECB Cold Chain Handling Protocols and the importing foreign country regulatory requirements.

    The requirements and protocols for each type of inspection are understood in terms of applicable regulations and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process of assisting a PPECB inspector in conducting a PTI inspection is explained and demonstrated in terms of port authority procedures.
