PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Tree workers need to be familiar with the various types of trees and the families to which they belong. Tree knowledge required includes: Their properties, as well as the conditions under which they thrive and adapt, as well as their maintenance and upkeep.

The need to know and understand the characteristics of alien and threatened species is also an important factor for tree workers.

This Unit Standard provides basic knowledge required by tree workers. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify basic tree families.
  • Describe the characteristics of basic tree families.
  • Identify alien tree and foliage.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or an equivalent.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or an equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify basic tree families for dismantling, felling and pruning operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The external common characteristics of the different tree families are described using examples.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Size, colour, foliage, deciduous or evergreen, fruiting characteristics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The characteristics of tree families in living trees, that are not observable to the naked eye, are explained with examples.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Special features, habitat, form, hard wood, soft wood, growth rate.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Trees are classified according to features.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Different tree classifications are discussed with examples.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Describe the characteristics of basic tree families.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Characteristics of basic tree families are described in terms of climbing techniques with respect to size, type of wood and habitat.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The effect of pruning is explained in terms of growth rate and foliage of certain tree families under certain weather conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The effects of poisonous, irritant and nuisance properties of tree families are identified.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Identify targeted trees and foliage for intervention.
    OUTCOME RANGE
    Targeted trees:
  • Alien, protected.

    Intervention:
  • Eradication, protection, pruning, felling.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Features of targeted species are identified and described in terms of their reaction towards intervention.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Procedure to be followed in handling protected trees is discussed in relation to environmental laws.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Knowledge of eradication procedures for alien vegetation is demonstrated and applied as required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Reasons for regeneration of some alien trees are given in terms of tree features and adaptation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Reasons for following up on regeneration are given.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • ,Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
