PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A tree worker or a colleague may get injured on duty, while, for example, operating a chain saw. Alternatively, a hazardous situation in and or around a tree work site may develop that may require the direct response of tree workers.
This means that tree workers should be equipped with an understanding of and familiarity with emergency rescue principles, procedures and techniques.

This Unit Standard is for people who climb trees to perform aerial rescue. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Stop work immediately to secure the site.
  • Relay information to emergency services.
  • Perform the aerial rescue operation.
  • Perform activities for post aerial rescue operations.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or an equivalent.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or an equivalent.
  • Basic safety in the urban forestry setting.
  • Chainsaw operation.
  • Basic tree climbing.

    Secure the site to perform aerial rescue 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The situation is assessed to identify risk involved and type of hazard that may hamper the rescue operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The situation is assessed to identify accessibility of site, and possible resources that will maximise the rescue operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Full site details and emergency procedures are established in view of developing a rescue plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Machinery and equipment is stopped from operating for safety reasons. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The area is secured by restricting access to public in accordance with standard operating procedures.
