PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to prepare and operate the safe movement of an EMU and motor coaches in accordance with the company procedures and "Principles of Safe Movement on Rail" (POSMOR) in normal and degraded mode.

A learner completing this unit standard will be able to:
  • Conduct preparation and stabling of the train.
  • Operate a train in normal mode.
  • Operate a train in degraded (abnormal) mode. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is inclusive of the following:
  • Power test.
  • Static Brake test.
  • Efficiency brake test.

    Degraded conditions include:
  • Emergency brake procedures.
  • Accidents/incidents reporting.
  • Fire.
  • Company specific protection procedures.

    Prepare and stable a train. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The components of the train are explained in terms of its purpose and function. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include but are not limited to the acceleration and braking system, bogies, wheels, engine, compressor, pantograph, communication systems, coach layout.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Visual information from the gauges is collated, analysed and evaluated to determine serviceability of the train. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Indicators and hazards are responded to in terms of company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Preparation of the train is conducted in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Yard/depot knowledge is applied in accordance with company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Yard/depot knowledge includes but is not limited to yard, depot layout.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Stabling operation is conducted in accordance to company standards and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Train handling skills to maintain a safe journey is demonstrated in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Road knowledge is applied in accordance with the prescribed route and company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Indicators and hazards are responded to in accordance with company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Indicators include but are not limited to warning systems, hand signals, alerts, alarms, warning boards.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The application of the running time and time tables for the prescribed route is explained to terms of meeting schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Arriving and departing from a station platform is demonstrated in accordance with operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Arrival and departure includes the operating of the doors for the embarking and disembarking of passengers.

    Operate a train in degraded (abnormal) mode. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Train operations in degraded mode are explained in terms of its impact on train movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identified defects are reported in accordance with company standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Defects include but are not limited to EMU or motor coach, track, traction power, communication.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are managed in accordance with company standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The contingency plan activation procedures to rectify a sub-standard condition is explained and demonstrated in accordance with company standards and procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Methods of assessment:
  • Written tests/case studies.
  • Oral/on-the-job.
  • In situ (on-the-job) observations.
  • Simulation.
  • Role-play/structured classroom discussions and oral tests.

    These methods must be selected carefully based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method could be used to assess knowledge; or on-the-job demonstration could be used to assess practical competence).

    The assessment must integrate a number of different methods (no less than three of those detailed above) in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes.

    The following tools may be used to supplement the above minimum assessment methods:

    Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience may serve to supplement the assessment of applied competence. The portfolio should include, inter alia:
  • Written statements from persons (e.g. current and/or previous employer, colleague, peer, manager, external customers) confirming competence of the learner.
  • Relevant certificates or awards.
  • Previous assessment records (in accordance with validation regulations relevant to the specific unit standard).
  • Journal (Logbook).

    Assessment mechanisms:
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that has been accredited by the relevant ETQA for Transport and Logistics Operations.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA for Transport and Logistics Operations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered and accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA for Transport and Logistics Operations.
  • Moderation of assessment will be done by the ETQA for Transport and Logistics Operations as prescribed.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be trained, qualified and certified or re-certified (in accordance with validation regulations relevant to the specific unit standard) in this specific unit standard and registered as an assessor with the ETQA for Transport and Logistics Operations.
