This unit standard will enable the learner to understand the effects of massage techniques on anatomy, physiology where pathology exists and apply these techniques to alleviate the problem.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the relationship of symptoms of pathology presented to the anatomical and physiological functioning of body systems.
  • Explain massage techniques and demonstrate the movements.
  • Interpret observed evidence of abnormal functioning in a presented body system within specific massage paradigm.

  • Pressure, speed, rhythm, flow, patient comfort, depth, general contra-indications and specific contra-indications.

    General effects of massage on the body are described with reference to the stimulating and relaxing elements of massage. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Interpret observed evidence of abnormal functioning in a presented body system within specific massage paradigms.

    Interpretation includes:
  • Conclusions on the balance of the system and actions to facilitate the normalisation of the system.

    Observed indicators are specified and these interpretations are consistent with presented abnormalities and the specified paradigm.
