PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to deliver patient-specific therapeutic reflexology treatments in a wide range of situations. Learners must be able to comfortably deliver a therapeutic reflexology treatment in any setting or site including clinic situations, both mobile and fixed, hospital units, community health centres, non-therapeutic environments.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Initiate a therapeutic reflexology treatment programme.
  • Prepare a patient for therapeutic reflexology treatment.
  • Deliver a therapeutic reflexology treatment.
  • Apply relaxation techniques within therapeutic reflexology treatment.
  • Monitor patient's response to therapeutic reflexology treatment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Initiate a therapeutic reflexology treatment programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reflexology treatment programme is presented to the patient and the patient's expectations of the treatment are clarified and/or confirmed in terms of the specific benefits and limitations of the proposed treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The patient's rights are explained with reference to their basic human rights, including the right to confidentiality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The specific features of the treatment are described and/or demonstrated to the patient with reference to their nature and purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Features may include:
  • Positioning of the patient, action of the therapist, sensations patient may experience, feedback required at each stage.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Patient comfort for the proposed treatment is confirmed and position adjusted if required.

  • Body supports, angle and incline.

    Prepare a patient for therapeutic reflexology treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Patient is correctly positioned for the proposed treatment in terms of patient's comfort, the particular treatment regime, and the optimum working position for the therapist. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Positioning includes:
  • Appropriate foot and leg support; angle of incline of patient; position the area to be treated in a comfortable working position.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Contact with the patient is professional and promotes confidence and openness to treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Patient's feet and ankles are prepared according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The area to be treated is identified and the patient is covered so that only the treatment area is exposed for optimum access by the therapist, without compromising the personal dignity and comfort of the patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Treatment is conducted throughout in a manner that respects the particular requirements of the patient in terms of patient's cultural norms.

    Deliver a therapeutic reflexology treatment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reflexes are identified and linked to corresponding anatomical areas of the body and the reflex area selected for treatment correlates with the anatomical division of the body part diagnosed for treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pressure applied is in accordance with specific treatment requirements and comfort levels of the patient and is adjusted as required to remain within the patient's pain thresholds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Therapeutic reflexology treatment techniques are applied at appropriate points of the body and stages of the treatment, in accordance with the treatment plan.

    Treatment techniques include:
  • Thumb, finger, knuckling.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reflexology treatment is delivered and paced according to the required rhythmic flow and comfort of the patient.

    Monitoring patient's comfort includes:
  • Verbal and non verbal feedback.

    Apply relaxation techniques within therapeutic reflexology treatment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stretching, twisting and wringing, and loosening techniques are applied at appropriate stages of the treatment when indicated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stretching techniques include:
  • Ankle stretch techniques.

    Twisting and wringing techniques include:
  • Medial/lateral twisting, wringing the foot.

    Loosening techniques include:
  • Ankle loosening, ankle rotation, toe rotation.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Passive movement techniques are applied at appropriate stages of the treatment when indicated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Passive movement techniques include:
  • Metatarsal side to side, metatarsal kneading, metatarsal loosening, diaphragm tension-releaser.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reflexes are stimulated at appropriate stages of the treatment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reflexes include:
  • Solar plexus, diaphragm, breathing.

    Stimulation includes:
  • Stroking movements to the foot, ankle and leg fascia.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The therapeutic reflexology treatment is delivered in accordance with specific treatment techniques and methods appropriate to the patient's individual requirements and sound ergonomic principles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ergonomic principles include:
  • Stance and posture, utilisation of body weight and breathing techniques.

    Monitor patient's response to therapeutic reflexology treatment.

    Patient's progress is monitored during treatment by means of specific post-treatment feedback and reviewed in terms of response to specific treatments.

    Treatment progression is monitored over a specified period.

    Feedback includes:
  • The human interaction and the actual treatment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations from expected anatomical norms are identified and monitored in terms of response to the treatment.

    Information gathered during treatments is critically analysed against the original assessment and required adjustments to the programme are made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Revised treatment and desired outcomes are discussed with the patient in terms of future treatment, and/or patient actions and choices. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

  • Ears: Superior, inferior, medial, lateral and posterior aspects of the ears.
