PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to prepare for and perform in various sections at national and international hairdressing competitions. The following types of competitions are applicable:
  • Manufacturer based.
  • Provincial.
  • National and international.
  • Technical or fashion.

    A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain hairdressing competition requirements.
  • Plan and prepare for a hairdressing competition.
  • Perform hairdressing competition techniques. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Perform hairstyling techniques, at NQF Level 2.
  • Perform long hairstyling techniques, at NQF Level 2.
  • Cut and shape gents hair, at NQF Level 3.
  • Cut and shape Ladies hair, at NQF Level 3.

    Selection of appropriate outfit, make-up, accessories, hairstyle, hair products and equipment are explained in terms of competition requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Importance of competition work is explained in relation to quality and benchmarking of the hairdressing industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Responsibilities of judges and wisemen are explained in terms of their roles in competitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The scoring systems for competitions are explained in terms of the requirements placed on the competitors.

    Rules and criteria are interpreted for the section according to competition requirements.

    The model/mannequin is chosen to suit the requirements of the competition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Model's/mannequin's hair is prepared in line with the competition requirements for the particular section. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Relevant competition documentation is completed in line with competition requirements.

    Documentation includes application and indemnity forms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Clothing, make-up, accessories and jewellery are selected that suit the competition section requirements.

    Perform hairdressing competition techniques.

    The learner must perform in at least 2 sections according to national/international rules.

    Hairdressing tools are used in line with competition rules and operational requirements.

    Hairdressing products are used in line with competition rules and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hairstyle outcomes are achieved in line with competition rules and section requirements.

    Time is managed in line with the competition section and requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Other ETQAs who have a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA would be responsible for moderation of achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
