PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 3 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to clean and lubricate strip, assemble and set/tune a range of clothing machinery. Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose a range of clothing machinery and to utilise garment construction skills in testing machines. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2 and must have successfully completed the National Certificate CTFL Sewing Mechanicians NQF Level 3 qualification.

  • Electronically controlled sewing machines.

    Adjust electronic sewing machine motor controls.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Motor types are identified and described in terms of operation and application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Magnetic clutch, servo, stepper motors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Speed controls are adjusted in accordance with company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fixed cycles are programmed in accordance with company/product requirements.

    Needle positioning is set according to product requirements.

    Trimming signals meet product requirements.

  • The assessor needs to be competent in the planning and conducting of assessment of learning outcomes as described in the unit standard-"Plan and conduct assessment of learning outcomes NQF Level 4".
  • Assessors need to register with the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body.
  • Assessors must be in possession of the NQF Level 4 sewing mechanicians qualification or equivalent and must have a minimum of 10 years relevant working experience OR have a minimum of 10 years working experience with electronic and pneumatic equipment.
