PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of, and to produce fingerwaves and pincurls.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Describe pincurls and elements of wave patterns.
  • Mould and scale and fingerwave hair using a variety of techniques.
  • Pincurl hair using a variety of techniques.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe pincurls and elements of wave patterns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Parts of a pincurl are identified and described according to industry accepted definitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parts of the pincurl include but are not limited to:
  • Stem, base and curl.
  • Long stem, half stem, no stem, stand up, indentation.
  • Reverse pincurl.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The direction of pincurls is described in terms of how it relates to the desired outcome. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Direction of pincurls could either be clockwise, anti-clockwise.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Elements of wave patterns are identified and described according to industry accepted definitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Elements of wave pattern include but are not limited to:
  • Crest and trough.
  • Waves lying parallel to each other.
  • Open end and a closed end.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Mould and scale and fingerwave hair using a variety of techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hair is prepared so that it can be manipulated from roots to ends. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hair is moulded and scaled in clean and clear directions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hair is manipulated and formed in a full head fingerwave movement according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Pincurl hair using a variety of techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hair is prepared so that it can be pincurled from roots to ends. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hair is manipulated and formed into pincurl forms in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pincurl forms include but are not limited to:
  • Barrel pincurl.
  • Flat clock wise and anti clockwise pincurl.
  • Reverse pincurl.
  • Indentation pincurl.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pincurls are secured using appropriate techniques that identify the direction of the pincurl. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The pincurl securing technique must:
  • Not be across the entire pincurl.
  • Indicate the direction of the pincurl.
  • Be determined by the size of the pincurl.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Other ETQAs who have a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA would be responsible for moderation of achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
