PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to monitor the condition of equipment and machinery in operation, diagnose faults, perform minor repairs on line and identify major repair requirements. Qualifying learners are required to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing to monitor and examine equipment and machinery for correct operation.
  • Examining equipment and machinery and perform minor repairs.
  • Completing the monitoring and examination process. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Maintaining gearboxes, compressors, bearings, pumps, heat exchangers and pressure vessels, direct and indirect drives, seals, brakes and clutches, pipes systems, lubricating systems and fluid power, pneumatic systems and other locomotive systems. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Locomotives may include but are not limited to electric motor-coaches, electric locomotives, diesel electric locomotives and diesel hydraulic locomotives.
  • Monitoring the performance of equipment and machinery on locomotives during operation may include but is not limited to daily brake, power/block, sequence and oil tests.

    Permission to examine equipment is obtained in accordance with specific worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specific worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required safety equipment and procedures are selected and implemented according specific worksite requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety equipment may include but not limited to:
  • Warning boards, isolating switches, lock-out systems, 'scotch blocks' and warning lights.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools, material and equipment required are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specific worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Workplace hazards are dealt with in accordance with specific worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The locomotive is positioned and secured in accordance with specific worksite requirements and current accepted best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of not preparing to monitor and examine the locomotive in line with specific worksite requirements, and current legislation are explained in terms of their impact on health, safety, environment and production. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Examine equipment and machinery and perform minor repairs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machinery isolated according to worksite and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment and machinery components are examined in order to identify type of repair to be carried out according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Minor repairs and maintenance are done accurately and timeously in order to avoid production problems and delays. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Major repairs identified are communicated to authorised individuals in accordance with specific worksite requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Actions to be taken to restore the service are explained in accordance with regulatory and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Potential repairs and maintenance problems are explained with examples pertaining to their impact on the operations schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Implications of not adhering to the sequence of activities and operations as prescribed are explained with examples of their impact on health, safety, environment and production.

    The required safety equipment is removed and stored according to specific worksite requirements.

    Administration tasks are completed and forwarded according to worksite specific requirements.

    Worksite, equipment, machinery and tools are cleaned in accordance with specific worksite requirements and good housekeeping practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment, instruments and tools are checked and problems are reported to authorised individuals according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment, instruments, tools and peripherals are stored according to specific worksite requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
