PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to control and organise scaffold teams to set up, erect and dismantle all types of access scaffolding. This supervisor of access scaffolding operations will be able to read and interpret drawings, liaise with the client, plan all activities and co-ordinate all required resources. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a scaffold supervisor of access scaffold teams.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of different types of access scaffolding, applications and compliance.
  • Reading and interpreting drawings, requirements and specifications.
  • Planning resources for erecting, using and dismantling access scaffolding.
  • Assessing site risks and accessibility.
  • Supervising the erection and modification of access scaffolding.
  • Supervising dismantling and site clearance procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role and responsibilities of the access scaffold supervisor are identified and explained in relation to the OHS Act and SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of access scaffolding, including special scaffolding, are described in terms of their applications and standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Types of access scaffolding, including special scaffolding, are described in terms of their limitations according to SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Access scaffolding components are identified and their application is controlled in terms of their safe working loads as per SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Classification for Access Scaffolding platforms, including multi-level platforms, and their loading limitations are complied with in terms of SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Stability requirements are interpreted and implemented as per the regulatory framework with reference to ties and bracing according to SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Relevant documentation, including Access Scaffolding Inspection Registers and Handover Certificates and the associated responsibilities of the Inspector are identified and described according to SANS 10085.

    The completion of access scaffold documentation and signage is supervised to ensure compliance with SANS 10085 and workplace procedures.

    Details and dimensions of access scaffold design are interpreted and applied to ensure compliance with specifications and according to client requirements.

    Access scaffolding equipment is identified and equipment list compiled according to drawings, specifications and/or client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe working loads on platforms and total loading on uprights are calculated in relation to the drawings, specifications and/or client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Additional client requirements are analysed in relation to the practical application of any scaffolding as per SANS 10085.

    Plan resources for erecting and modifying access scaffolding.

    The erection and modification sequence of access scaffolding is organised and work activities are controlled in accordance with safe and cost-effective working methods.

    The erection and modification of access scaffolding and platforms are supervised to comply with drawings and/or client requirements and cross-referenced to relevant, safety legislation and SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The removal of excess equipment from the site is performed in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Supervise dismantling and site clearance procedures.

    The dismantling of Access scaffolding is supervised in accordance with relevant specifications, legislation and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Lay down/staging areas for materials are identified and allocated in accordance with legislative and site requirements for safety and security. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Transportation, materials and crews are scheduled and work activities are sequenced in accordance with program and safety legislation requirements.

    Site procedures for the clearance of materials, equipment and crews are adhered to and completed within prescribed deadlines.
