PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the conducting of fisheries compliance responsibilities who need to augment practical competence with the theoretical knowledge of physical oceanography and meteorology within the operational environment The learner who has achieved this unit standard will enhance his/her employability and will contribute to the sustainable use of marine resources, to the overall advancement of the sub-field.

In particular, learners will be able to:
  • Identify the main physical features governing the oceanographic environment around South Africa.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of practical meteorology as it applies to the area of operation.
  • Explain coastal processes impacting on the operational environment.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Communication Literacy at NQF Level 2.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Information gathering, analysis, interpretation and evaluation:
  • This unit standard promotes study and research into coastal, oceanic and weather processes. It will, among other skills, enable the learner to interpret a synoptic chart, and to use the information that a synoptic chart conveys.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
    Effective Communication:
  • This unit standard promotes clear reasoning as well as effective writing skills.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
    Use of science and technology:
  • This unit standard covers a large part of the oceanography studies required by a fisheries officer entering the profession. The idea is to provide the learner with the scientific basis of marine resource guardianship.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
    Inter-relatedness of systems:
  • Ecological awareness is essential in any effort to explain coastal and oceanic processes.

  • UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA
    N/A

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
The actual learning programme developed against this unit standard will vary according to the fishery and or geographical area in which the learner will be employed, bearing in mind that the programme should not be so limited as to exclude broad applicability of the unit standard.

    Values:

Demonstration of the knowledge and skills outlined in this unit standard must be consistent with the principles of:
  • Maintaining essential ecological processes and life-support systems.
  • Maintaining genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.
  • Considering ecological and social rights and responsibilities, whilst ensuring sustainable utilisation of species and ecosystems.
  • The intention is to yield the greatest sustainable and equitable benefit to present generations whilst maintaining the potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
