PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the influence of wood structure and properties.

The qualifying learner is capable of describing the influence of wood structure and properties, and certain production factors on its quality.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain the wood quality requirements generally specified by the main users of wood products.
  • Describe the effect of wood growth properties on quality requirements.
  • Describe the effect of machined wood properties on these quality requirements.
  • Describe the effect of the drying out process of wood on these quality requirements.

    The quality requirements of wood are explained according to end user specifications, wood quality and using timber trade and wood technological terminology. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the effect of wood growth properties on these quality requirements. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Quality requirements include structure, knots, spiral grain, juvenile wood, reaction wood, annual rings, heartwood and sapwood.

    Different types of distortion, checking surface and internal, collapse, discoloration, average moisture content, moisture content distribution, and drying stresses.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
