PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of diagnostic and Procedure coding. Learners would be able to contribute to quality services in diagnostic and Procedure coding by evaluating and assigning ICD and Procedure Codes pertaining to Special Groups within the coding system.

Special Groups include but are not limited to Infectious and parasitic diseases; neoplasms; diseases of the blood and blood forming organs; certain disorders involving the immune mechanism; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases; mental and behavioral disorders; pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium; conditions originating in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities; injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes. |
