PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of diagnostic and Procedure Coding. Learners would be able to contribute to the quality of data by using the skills required to interpret and/or assess the clinical data, and assign ICD and Procedure Codes pertaining to the relevant body systems. This will ensure valuable data, for use in future health related planning.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Identify and extract data from medical records pertaining to the conditions of the identified body systems.
  • Apply the coding rules of both ICD and Procedure Codes pertaining to relevant body systems.
  • Apply coding and data capturing standards. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Communication at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Body Systems include but are not limited to Nervous; Optic and adnexa; Auditory; Respirator; Digestive; Integumentary; Musculoskeletal and connective tissue; Genito-urinary; Cardiac and adnixa. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and extract data from medical records pertaining to the conditions of the identified body systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The data in medical records is analysed to identify and extract the relevant data within coding related to body systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Data are translated to ICD and Procedure Codes in order to accurately reflect the clinical information of the patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The value of the recorded data is analysed to determine how it impacts on the medical, research and/or health insurance environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Extracted data are examined to determine how they can inform health care programmes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the coding rules of both ICD and Procedure Codes pertaining to relevant body systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Coding rules of ICD and Procedure Codes are applied to accurately assign the primary diagnosis from the extracted data related to the conditions of the body systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Coding rules specific to the body systems are applied to clinical information to ensure an accurate set of data. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coding rules include but are not limited to gender, age, medical terminology, coding terms, rules and conventions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    South African Coding standards are used to assign ICD and Procedure Codes to body systems' data to provide accurate information for future assessment and planning in the healthcare environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    ICD and Procedure Codes are assigned to reflect rules requied in medical records concerning conditions on body systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply coding and data capturing standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Codes assigned indicate specific rather than general conditions in order to add value to clinical reports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sequenced and fully coded conditions and procedures are applied to ensure accurate data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Provision is made in the coding system for use of certain coding rules to ensure consistency in their use and application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Certain coding rules include but are not limited to: Dagger and asterisks, sequelae, coding of local infections, external cause codes, morphology codes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Certain coding rules are analysed to reflect their effect on the data. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.
  • The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area, post qualification.
  • The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification:

    > An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner's competency.
