  • Identify diseased plants.
  • Identify the growth habits of the plant (various types of roses, shrubs).
  • Identify appropriate pruning methods for that type of plant.
  • Prune roses, flowering shrubs and other plants to promote healthy growth and optimum flowering.
  • Prune shrubs for different needs.
  • Prune climbing plants so that they thrive and grow to their full potential.

    Assess the pruning needs of ornamental plants and shrubs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A selection of various types of roses, are identified through the recognition of their particular characteristics and growth habits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A selection of various ornamental shrubs and plants are identified and the most suitable time of the year to prune each of these is indicated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The inspection and assessment of various plants, shrubs and roses is conducted and a description is given of the type of pruning that each requires. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A selection of commonly used shrubs and climbers that require trimming, shaping and training are identified and the most suitable time of the year to perform these functions is indicated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prune ornamental shrubs that flower on the new season's growth.

    The pruning requirements of spur bearing shrubs and trees are explained in respect of the specific pruning principles that should be used to promote the optimum flowering and growth.

    The sections of the plant that produce flowers on spur bearing trees and shrubs that must be critically assessed before pruning are identified and the appropriate pruning techniques are indicated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods of pruning spur bearing shrubs and trees are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A selection of commonly used shrubs and trees that produce flowers on their spurs are identified and their flowering time is indicated.

    Use specialist pruning techniques on ornamental shrubs and trees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The techniques that are required when pruning/shaping evergreen/topiary shrubs is explained and the procedures for pruning these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The need to identify and remove all "green" growth on variegated shrubs and trees is explained and the procedures for pruning these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The techniques that are required when pruning berried/fruiting shrubs is explained and the procedures for pruning these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The techniques that are required when pruning trees and shrubs that have attractive bark is explained and the procedures for pruning these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Prune climbing roses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A selection of commonly used climbing roses are identified and their particular growth habits are indicated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why climbing roses produce upright canes that bear no flowers in summer is explained in terms of the role that the apical meristem has in the climber's growth. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of pruning and training climbing roses are explained in terms of achieving the desired form and density of plant growth through the manipulation of the branches. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons why the growth of upright stems should be encouraged throughout summer is explained in terms of the function that these stems perform. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The techniques for pruning a climbing rose in winter are demonstrated in accordance with the company's procedures.
