PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners who are already managers of functions or aspiring to become managers of functions. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sector and of the society by providing competent function managers who are able to manage the aspects involved with product or service delivery activities at a strategic level and who require the use of intellectual assets or property to render products or services to clients and/or customers.

The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills required to ensure that knowledge management systems, policies and procedures are developed and implemented in order to enhance knowledge and communication strategy of the function/entity.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Develop a framework for creating, sharing, capturing and protecting management information and institutional knowledge.
  • Develop a processes for promoting information and knowledge management in the function.
  • Evaluate the processes and practices relating to information and knowledge management.
  • Develop an action plan to address gaps in information and knowledge management processes and practice.

    The framework is analysed to ensure it is aligned to the knowledge management policy of the entity.

    The processes covers the creation, sharing and capturing of information within the function, the entity and with external stakeholders.

    The process is analysed to ensure alignment with the strategy and the overall role of the function within the entity.

    The process is analysed to ensure alignment with processes of other functions of the entity.

    Policies and procedures relating to the protection of knowledge assets and/or intellectual property are described in the process.

    Common processes and practices are evaluated against the framework for knowledge management of the function.

    Reasons for gaps are analysed in the framework for knowledge management of the function.

    Possible ways of addressing the gaps are analysed in order to maintain the integrity of the knowledge management system of the function.

    Develop an action plan to address gaps in information and knowledge management processes and practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Gaps and/or practices of non-adherence to the knowledge management framework are addressed at the appropriate levels/s. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Adjustments to the framework and processes are recommended to improve the management of information and knowledge. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the importance of maintaining and improving the framework protection of knowledge assets.

    Trends in knowledge sharing are monitored and relevant databases and processes are refined to improve the framework.

    An explanation is given of how the value and necessity of life long learning and information sharing is captured in and reflected in the vision and strategy of the function/entity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The organisational climate is analysed to identify motivators and inhibitors of knowledge sharing and protection behaviour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mechanisms to encourage and enhance knowledge sharing and protection behaviours are developed and incorporated into existent functional/organisational systems and processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mechanisms to motivate staff to seek new sources of information and increase the knowledge base of the function are developed and communicated throughout the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Opportunities for information sharing amongst key role players in knowledge management are identified and incorporated into the function/organisational schedule with due cognisance given to the ethics of intellectual capital/property. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Mechanisms are instituted to ensure that there is a balance between the protection of information/intellectual property and the interest to grow the intellectual capital of the function/organisation.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
