PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard constitutes an integral aspect of waste management which is an important part of environmental management. The collection and transportation of waste is one of the key functions of a learner who embarks on a specialisation in waste management. The learner will be able to explain the terminology and principles of waste management and the activities, regulatory requirements and potential impacts related to the collection and transport of waste.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:

  • Explain the activities and resources related to collection and transport of waste.
  • Apply regulatory requirements and performance standards for collection and transport of waste.
  • Identify and describe the potential impacts or environmental risks associated with deviations from performance standards.

    The activities related to collection and transport of waste are described in a manner that illustrates the importance of each of these aspects in the waste management sector.

    The methods of collection are determined and appropriate means of transport are identified from the range of options available.

    The most appropriate option is selected to ensure the financial viability of the exercise.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant legislation pertaining to collection and transport of waste is identified and explained in terms of how it can demonstrate controls for health and safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legislation includes but is not limited to the South African National Standards (SANS) codes and government guidelines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The applicable performance standards are identified and described to indicate national targets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Existing practices are evaluated against applicable performance standards to see if they are in line with the national standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recommendations are made to meet expected standards and corrective action is taken to ensure adequate health and safety.

    Potential environmental hazards are identified to provide a comprehensive picture of the challenges in the collection and transport of waste.

    The environmental consequences of the potential impacts are explained in terms of the possible damage that will be caused and the costs involved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The manner in which consequences can be prevented, controlled or mitigated is explained and appropriate pre-emptive measures are identified that could be used to maintain health and safety. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
