PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable the learner to, in combination with context expertise standard(s), explain the physiological requirements of a Technical Official to maintain appropriate levels of fitness to enable him or her to carry out the required officiating functions. The learner will be able to elaborate on the physiological implications in the context of Technical Officiating. In addition, the learner will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice to other areas which involves Technical Officiating

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and becompetent in:
  • Describing the aspects of fitness required to perform successfully as a Technical Official.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of nutritional factors which may influence the ability of Technical Officials to perform effectively.
  • Demonstrating techniques used to develop visual strength in preparation for an Event.
  • Explaining the effects of sleep and the importance it plays in the role of effective Technical Officiating.
  • Identifying and managing the impact of fatigue.

    On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further, more complex processes related to Technical Officiating.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fitness demands are identified and described with reference to the roleand level of officiating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    General aspects and levels of fitness appropriate to these demands are maintained in order to perform effectively. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An appropriate set of exercises designed to establish and maintain fitness for a Technical official in a chosen sport code is demonstrated with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of nutritional factors, supplements and drugs which may influence the ability of Technical Officials to perform effectively.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of basic food groups is understood in relation to physical performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physical factors influenced by Glycaemic Index are understood in relation to performance as a Technical Official. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Substances/activities that could adversely affect the level of fitness are identified and managed to meet officiating rules and regulations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate techniques used to develop visual strength in preparation for an Event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of visual alertness and accuracy is understood in respect to effective performance as a Technical Official in a chosen sport code. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An appropriate set of exercises designed to establish and maintain visual fitness for a Technical official in a chosen sport code is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mental strategies are developed and applied to cope with the demands of specific events. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the effects of sleep and the importance it plays in the role of effective Technical Officiating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of the physiological requirements for sleep is demonstrated with specific accent on an understanding of the symptoms of lack of sleep. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of Cycadian Rhythms is understood in relation to physical performance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Identify and manage the impact of fatigue. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The term "fatigue" is explained with regards to technical officiating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The signs and symptoms of fatigue are identified and described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate actions are taken to prevent and manage fatigue when presented with the symptoms. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard for the purposes of achieving credits, including through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution recognised for assessment purposes by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard, or assessing this unit standard, for the purposes of achieving credits must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
