PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who wish to pursue a career in technical officiating in the sport of volleyball at a beginner level. Learners will be equipped with knowledge and skills required successfully interpret and apply fundamental rules and regulations of volleyball to effectively officiate at an introductory level.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of volleyball game.
  • Assessing conditions for volleyball event.
  • Observing an event to identify information on which to base decisions.
  • Interpreting and applying rules and regulations to control the volleyball game and players.
  • Communicating decisions and manage the outcomes of decision-making while officiating.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the volleyball game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A basic overview of the history of volleyball is provided to show understanding of the origins and expansion of the game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic overview refers to but is not limited to the origin of the game, expansion of volleyball in South Africa.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and philosophy of a volleyball game is explained in terms of the general rules of officiating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The responsibilities of various referees involved in the game are identified and explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess conditions for the volleyball event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The conditions of players are assessed in terms of their suitability to participate in the game.

    Facilities and equipment are assessed to ensure that they meet the requirements of the game.

    The importance of using a proper environment or surface when setting up volleyball net is explained with examples.

    A suitable surface of volleyball court is identified in accordance with the rules and regulations.

    The levels of safety and other risks are assessed to confirm compliance with the rules and regulations prior to commencement of the game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Deviations in relation to the conditions as required by the rules and regulations are assessed and recorded for corrective action.

    Observe the game to identify information on which to base decisions.

    Players and other officials are observed to assessed to ensure that the game is conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations.

    The observation is conducted with minimal disruptions.

    Breaches of the rules and regulations by players and other officials during the game are identified and recorded for reporting and decision-making purposes.

    The reactions of players and other officials are managed in accordance with the fundamental rules and regulations of volleyball game. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
