PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who assist with designing and building courses for equestrian events at entry level. It is designed to develop knowledge, application of safety measures and skills to design courses for equestrian events within the framework of Organizational rules.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be competent in:
  • Understanding the event area requirements.
  • Understanding the event equipment requirements.
  • Understanding the event area and equipment dimensions.
  • Understanding the ratio between distance, area and equipment placement for an equestrian event.
  • Interpreting and applying rules and regulations when designing a course for an equestrian event in accord with the spirit and fair play of the event and organizational requirements.
  • Communicating decisions and managing the outcome of the decision-making relating to designing and building a course for an equestrian event.
  • Assisting with designing a course for an equestrian event.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in the following:

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Equestrian Event includes but is not limited to showjumping, dressage, eventing, equitation, showing, vaulting, endurance, polo, polocrosse, Trec, mounted games, horse racing, driving, tentpegging, gymkhana, western riding, reining, saddleseat and horseball. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    The physical features of area required for an event are evaluated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Event equipment types are identified and listed in accordance with organizational rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Environment, facilities and equipment are assessed/inspected prior the event in accordance with organizational requirements to ensure safety and a fair result. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment types include but are not limited to arena, arena equipment, obstacles, markers, horses, tack, permanent and moveable obstacles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety and risk factors are assessed prior to the commencement of the event to ensure safety of competitors, horses and the public including event officials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dimensions, distances, speed, timing and other numerical considerations for an event are described in a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knowledge of how the event is organized is demonstrated using a given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Observe the event to effectively base fundamental decisions on course design.

    The event is observed in order to determine how the course is designed in accordance with organizational rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Breaches of rules and regulations by competitors and event officials are identified according to organizational rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct use of ancillary equipment is demonstrated in order to ensure smooth running of the event. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ancillary equipment includes but is not limited to bells, flags, markers, measuring wheels/sticks.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Rules and regulations are interpreted and applied in accordance with the discipline organizing/governing body requirements as they relate to designing courses.

    Rules and regulations are explained in accordance with the organizational rule book. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Course designing is explained in terms of the requirements of the event and rule book.

    Safety rules are explained in accordance with organizational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rules or regulations for course designing in a given situation are interpreted accurately and consistently in accord with intent of the rules of the equestrian event.

    Rules and regulations for course designing are applied using relevant information relating to the equestrian event. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Communicate decisions and manage the outcome of decision-making when designing courses for an equestrian event.

    Decisions are communicated in accord with accepted best practice principles of equestrian events.

    Decision-making is based on relevant information and consistent with the intent of the rules of equestrian sport and fair play. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Establish and complete a course design for an equestrian event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Administrative duties and responsibilities related to the event are carried out by completing the relevant paperwork as required by the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A course design is completed in accordance with the event guidelines and organizational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
