PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who participate as Umpires to control the game and the players or used as Timekeeper/Scorer at a netball match. In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency of netball official (Timekeeper and Scorer) with primary focus on the application of the rules and regulations to enhance the quality of the game. On achievement of this unit standard the learner will be able to physical keep score and to keep time at a netball match.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of a netball game.
  • Applying the fundamental rules and regulations to control the netball game and the players.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the different types of documents used at a match.
  • Providing feedback on the result of the game according to international score sheet.

    Demonstrate an understanding of a netball game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the origin and history of netball game is demonstrated in relation to the international and South African contexts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and philosophy of officiating a netball game is explained within the context of the roles and responsibilities of an umpiring a netball game. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the fundamental rules and regulations to control the netball game and the players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fundamental rules and regulations of netball are explained in order to make accurate decisions when officiating a game. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Netball rules refer to but are not limited to the rules from AENA rulebook.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The roles of a netball umpire/co-umpire and scorer/timekeeper are identified and explained in order to effectively officiate a game of netball is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An understanding of the rules of the game is demonstrated according to different time periods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The environment within which the netball game is to take place is checked in order to ensure own safety and that of others before the match begins. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Environment includes but is not limited to the courtside areas in terms of the court surface.
  • Safety refers to but is not limited to the court surface to be free of ice or dangerous things such as tennis potholes, pools of water, sport bags with straps and other perilous items.
  • Safety of players refers to but is not limited to ensuring that players are not wearing jewellery, have the appropriate kit and suitable footwear.

    The significance of performing pregame, during game and postgame procedures is explained in terms of officiating responsibilities.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of documents used at a match.

    Different types of documents used in a netball match are identified and described in terms of their uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of completing all documents during a match is explained in terms of the game requirements.

    Physical score is kept during a match for record purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Time is kept reflecting on different times of a match (Injury time, Umpires time and official time) in terms of timekeeping requirements.

    Documents are completed correctly and handed over to statics office and media.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
  • Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
