PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who wish to participate as judges in the sport of Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics. This unit standard will provide learners with competencies required to judge Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics competition(s) in a consistent, fair and impartial manner. The learner will be capable of combining a range of self-discipline and life long observation skills with a working knowledge of the techniques of the sport, and integrate these within the context of competitions.

The learner will be capable in:
  • Demonstrating an understanding and knowledge of Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics.
  • Apply the rules of judging in their specific level of judging.
  • Evaluate the gymnast on the Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics equipment and ensure quality in their judging performances. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard covers all (including but not limited to) aspects of judging on Level 1-3 for Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics namely:
  • Regulations of the Specific Code of Points.
  • Rules and Regulations of judging on that level.
  • Competition structure.
  • Level 1-3 Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics routines.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The structure of Gymnastics is explained with regards of the position of Men's/and or Women's Artistic in the sport of Gymnastics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Structure including but not limited to different disciplines and includes Project Management and different competitions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Management's structure of Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics is explained within the South African Gymnast Federation in terms of their responsibilities and duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Current Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics sequences are identified and listed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sequences; Level 1-3 for Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The minimum equipment requirements are explained for all Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics competitions-SO 1. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including, but not limited to, floor, vault, parallel-bars and low bar for Men's Artistic Gymnastics and floor, asymmetric bars, beam and floor in Women's Artistic Gymnastics in relation to the levels of competition.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The minimum requirements of participation, of the different levels of judges, are explained for all compulsory competitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Judging levels (Intermediate, Provincial, National and International-SO 1).
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the rules of judging in their specific level of judging in Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Rules include, but are not limited to execution deduction for loss of form or errors, falls and omission of prescribed elements for Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The duties of judges at different levels are explained and applied in the context of a competition, inclusive of skill deductions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Code of Conduct in respect of the different stakeholders of Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics is explained in terms of application in a Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The position of the different stakeholders in Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The protocol of club, Regional and Provincial participation is explained and understood as it is set out in club, Provincial and National competitions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate the gymnast's Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The gymnast's performance on the Men's/and or Women's Artistic Gymnastics equipment is evaluated using a simulation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations from the learned skill is identified and described in order to make deductions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Deductions are calculated on judges score sheet in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The judges marks of the competitors are noted on the gymnasts score sheets and calculated for record keeping purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Own performance is benchmarked against the Head judges score sheet of that competition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Marks of the gymnast performance are communicated using a score card.
