PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge about diving to plan, implement and evaluate a practice session. They will be able to apply coaching techniques by assessing learner swimming competence and introduce diving skills to beginners.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and extent of the sport of diving.
  • Creating a safe environment for diving.
  • Implementing a diving practice session for beginners.
  • Evaluating the coaching process.

    Organisational structures responsible for diving are described in the South African context.

    The roles and responsibilities of the club, provincial and national diving structures are explained according to their constitutions.

    Facilities and environment are checked for hazards before practice sessions and competitions.

    Equipment is evaluated in terms of its suitability for protection and safety for the divers.

    Safety of juniors is evaluated in terms of fluid intake and protection from the elements.

    Rules of diving are applied according to FINA rules and regulations.

    A diving practice session for beginners is planned in terms of the divers' characteristics and sporting needs according to Swimming SA's age specific skills development plan.

    Characteristics include, but are not limited to:

    Identify the element tenacity and coping with stress and risk in a learner.

    Basic diving skills and techniques are taught through observation and demonstration using available resources according to the planned practice session.

    Planned training is adapted in relation to the developmental stages of beginners being coached.

    A logbook on practice sessions is compiled to critically reflect on the effectiveness of coaching.

    Individual assessment reports are completed to show progression within diving grade award scheme.

    Feedback is provided to divers in terms of skills and performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Practice session plans are revised in relation to the own observations and feedback. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
