PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to provide Judo coaching on club level in support of the coaching of the skills of Judo to a range of individuals ranging from beginners to 1st Dan graded athletes.

The qualifying learner will be able to coach the technical elements of Judo, showing understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required by participants at club level in the sport.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Coach the laws governing the sport of Judo.
  • Identify safety requirements for Judo.
  • Plan practice sessions for beginner to intermediate Judokas.
  • Coach the entry-level skills and conditioning of Judo.
  • Review coaching sessions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • The unit standard-"Conduct Basic Coaching To Beginners In Judo".

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be in possession of a 1st Dan grading in Judo as to enable the inferring of competencies associated with experience in the sport of Judo. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The leaner will be able to work independently and requires a 1st Dan black belt grading in the sport in order to transfer the skills and competencies associated with grading ranging from yellow belt to 1st Dan graded participants.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Coach the laws governing the sport of Judo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of competitive Judo is provided to show understanding of the evolution of Judo as a sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condensed history of Judo as a competitive sport, the international and local development of the sport, competition categories, qualifying requirements, grading requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws governing the sport are described as it applies to grading and competitions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terminology, scoring, ethics, protocol of the sport.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of the referee as adjudicator of the laws of Judo is described in the context of fair play, ethical behaviour and the maintaining of individual safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the safety requirements for Judo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Unsafe situations are identified within the context of intervention requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Unsafe situations on the mat both in terms of transfer of skills and techniques, the correction and application of techniques, conditioning during practice sessions including-grips, blocks, throws, falls. Personal conduct of Judokas, fair play versus dangerous play, general occupational health and safety as it applies to the environment in which coaching take place.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of the coach is explained in the context of the safety of athletes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety intervention, maintaining of individual and club discipline, official signals and control requirements as it applies to coaching, conditioning and drilling of techniques of the sport, individual contests.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of fair play and the ethics of the sport are taught in the context of individual safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual contact, preventative techniques including yielding, avoiding of personal injury, importance of effective learner supervision, correct warming up and preparation, use of correct equipment and facilities.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Plan practice sessions for beginner to intermediate Judokas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal and/or team objectives are identified so as to inform the planning of practice sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of a coaching programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of personal growth and development are included in the coaching/practice programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A range of practice sessions is developed to enable effective conditioning and technical skills transfer associated with grading and preparation on competitive level. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different techniques, instructional methods for conditioning as is required for an annual plan including grading and competition preparation on club level.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Coach the entry-level skills and conditioning of Judo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of physical conditioning for the sport are explained and applied in practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Warming up, cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, suppleness, Judo techniques from yellow belt to 1st Dan.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate coaching methods are used to meet the needs of Judokas. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practical demonstration of specific techniques, voice projection, instructional methods/styles, motivation and applicable communication skills as used in the coaching of the sport.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The technical skills of Judo are taught in scheduled practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correction of wrong techniques, affirmation of correct techniques, rectification of personal styles and techniques.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of personal growth, development and discipline are included in the training programme in support of personal and/or team objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A logbook is maintained to record conducted coaching sessions.

    Review coaching sessions.

    Individual progress is evaluated and practice sessions adjusted to address personal development as per personal and/or team objectives.

    Records are maintained to indicate modifications of coaching sessions to the coaching plan. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

    External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING 
    The planning and conducting of coaching sessions at club level for a range of Judokas ranging from yellow belt to brown belt grading will require the addressing of situations associated with the progression of activities and skills of the individual both in terms of grading and competitive skills and techniques. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING 
    Teamwork is supported in the working with others and in a team as it relates to the coaching of individuals at club level.

    Self organisation and management is supported in the planning, conducting and recording of coaching sessions as it applies to coaching at club level.

    Effective communication is supported in the planning and conducting of coaching sessions in the use of written and verbal communication skills on club level. In addition written communication skills are supported via the administrative requirements associated with club level coaching.

    The practices associated with the sport internationally as well as the impact of the sport on an individual and group basis supports and understanding of the world as a set of interrelated systems. The consideration of personal objectives, coaching requirements as well as the individual performance of Judokas enhances the requirement to understand the world as a set of interrelated systems.
