PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to operate as a coach or instructor in support of the coaching of the entry-level swimming skills to individuals including adults and children with no swimming competency, in order to generate interest and to encourage new entrance and addressing the broad based swimming competency in the community.

The qualifying learner will be able to explain and instruct the basis components of swimming, showing understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required by beginners to the sport, in particular as it relates to "learn to swim" instruction.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe the evolution and sociology of swimming as a sport.
  • Explain the safety requirements impacting on the aquatic and swimming environment.
  • Explain the techniques associated with swimming and swimming instruction.
  • Plan and write up an aquatic programme for beginner swimmers.
  • Conduct basic swimming coaching activities for beginners in swimming.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in:

    It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be competent swimmers and in possession of a first aid certificate so as to handle any emergency incidents in the coaching of beginner swimmers.

    Describe the evolution and sociology of swimming as a sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of swimming is provided to show understanding of its evolution. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condensed history of the sport, the development of the sport, the basic principles of the sport, the application of the sport in terms of recreational and competitive application, swimming disciplines and aquatic federations where the skill is applied in different swimming disciplines such as diving, water-polo, synchronised swimming, open water swimming.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An overview of the sociological issues affecting swimming is provided to show the impact of swimming on social transformation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Swimming and the instruction of swimming are explained in terms of the benefits to the individual and the community. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Transformation in the sport, recreational benefits, individual safety, reduction of drowning incidents.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the safety requirements impacting on the aquatic and swimming environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal responsibilities are explained in terms of the requirements of ensuring the safety of participants in swimming. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual responsibilities including indemnities, child protection, public safety standards, declaration of impediment that may constitute a safety hazard, duty of care, negligence, insurance, importance of effective learner supervision, use of correct equipment and facilities, requirement of first aid competency.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of understanding safety rules and requirements is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of aquatic safety are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic principles of water safety, entry without supervision, survival, rescue techniques, contact rescue, non-contact rescue, avoiding of horse-play, adequate supervision, unsafe conditions, hazardous behaviour including running and rowdiness, equipment lying around.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The interventions and equipment needed to ensure safety of participation, are described to ensure preventative and remedial action in an aquatic environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of equipment and equipment use, storage of equipment, first aid kits, importance of correct technical instruction, safety precautions in the practicing of swimming techniques under supervision.

    Explain the techniques associated with swimming and swimming instruction.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of movement in water are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breathing, buoyancy, flotation, resistance, propulsion, games and water activities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Techniques are explained as it applies to aquatic familiarisation for beginner swimmers. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessing and exiting, familiarising with the aquatic environment and submerging, tidiness and water hygiene, deep-end confidence, water self-rescue and floatation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The four competitive strokes are identified and explained so as to differentiate between the techniques used for each discipline. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    History, skills and drills associated with Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly stroke.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Plan and write up an aquatic programme for beginner swimmers.

    The objectives of an aquatic instruction programme are listed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coaching session plans is restricted to elements and techniques associated with beginner swimmers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of the programme and instruction sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Setting up a safe work environment, registration table, venue entry, access to ablution facilities, aquatic environment, training/instruction aids and games/activities applicable to the demographic profile of the target audience, first aid kit, emergency numbers and procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The scheduling of activities within the coaching session is listed to ensure time management of instruction sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A basic lesson plan is written to conduct an aquatic instruction session suitable to the demographic profile of the individuals coached.

    Appropriate teaching and coaching methods are used to meet the coaching needs of participants.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principles of movement are used to introduce participants to swimming and to familiarise individuals with the aquatic environment.

    Entry and exit, body position, leg action, arm action, breathing and timing, drills for each component, stroke development.

    The core skills and techniques of swimming are coached.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
