PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to coach full hockey at school and club level. Furthermore, the learner will be able to explain the tactical and technical elements required to play the game of hockey as well as the hockey skills required at this level.

The qualifying learner will be able to coach full field hockey to beginner and intermediate level players.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Executing the roles and responsibilities of a hockey coach.
  • Demonstrating hockey coaching skills.
  • Coaching beginner to intermediate level hockey skills.

    Execute the roles and responsibilities of a hockey. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of safety in hockey are described in the context of fair play and sportsmanship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aspects of fair play and sportsmanship: hockey rules, foul play, drugs in sport and inclusion of special needs players.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The International Hockey Federation (FIH) code of conduct is adapted for use in a local coaching context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of the coach is explained with reference to his/her responsibility as a role model. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate hockey coaching skills.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Coaching methods and techniques are demonstrated to meet the needs of individual players in given scenarios.

    Coaching skills include, but is not limited to: Listening skills, communication feedback, teaching styles and instructional styles.

    Communication methods are demonstrated in relation to cultural and ethnic diversity in coaching hockey.

    Player performance in a game is evaluated and recorded in relation to training plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Training methods are evaluated to achieve the objective of encouraging fun and enjoyment in hockey games and training.

    Coach beginner to intermediate level hockey skills.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The laws of the game of hockey are explained in terms of their application at beginner to intermediate level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Terminology used in hockey is explained according to South African Hockey Federation definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lesson plans are compiled according to training objectives relative to different age groups. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Practice sessions are facilitated in accordance with the lesson plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Drills are facilitated in relation to prescribed skills for improving hockey technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Basic tactical principles are explained in relation to game objectives. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
