Qualifying learners will acquire the necessary knowledge about volleyball to plan, implement and evaluate a practice session. They will be able to apply coaching techniques to develop volleyball skills to beginners.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and extent of the sport of volleyball.
  • Creating a safe environment for volleyball.
  • Implementing a volleyball practice session for beginners.
  • Evaluating the coaching process.

    Understand the nature and extent of the sport of volleyball.

    The historical development of the game is explained in relation to the South African context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Organisational structures responsible for volleyball are described in the South African context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Oganisational structures include, but are not limited to:
  • Club, provincial, national, continental zonal, continental and international.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles and responsibilities of the club, provincial and national volleyball structures are explained according to their constitutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of competitions are explained in terms of their rules. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Competitions include, but are not limited to round robin, knock out and league.

    Facilities and environment are checked for hazards before practice sessions and during the game.

    Equipment is evaluated in terms of its suitability for protection and safety for the players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety of juniors is evaluated in terms of fluid intake and protection from the elements.

    Role and responsibilities of a coach are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A volleyball practice session for beginners is planned in terms of players' characteristics and sporting needs according to Volleyball specific skills development plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Characteristics include, but are not limited to; Psychological, physical and sociological.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic volleyball skills and techniques are taught through observation and demonstration using available resources according to the planned practice session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic Team formations, systems and tactics are explained and implemented in practice sessions.

    Evaluate the coaching process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A logbook on practice sessions and modified games is compiled to critically reflect on the effectiveness of coaching.

    Feedback is provided to players in terms of skills and performance.

    Practice session plans are revised in relation to the own observations and feedback. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
