PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate the use of personal life-saving appliances and explain the principles of personal survival (and assist in preparing, launching, and embarkation to survival craft) in the event of ship abandonment at sea.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing emergencies at sea and survival principles.
  • Demonstrating the use of life-saving appliances.
  • Demonstrating life raft boarding activities.

    This unit standard will contribute to the learner achieving the SAMSA licensing requirements for the specific seagoing maritime sector. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this Unit Standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Work must be carried out in accordance with the relevant maritime legislation, specifically the legislation dealing with PST.
  • Vessels may include any commercial vessel engaged in port operations activities, near coastal voyages and operating in limited and unlimited waters.

    Describe emergencies at sea and survival principles.

    The types of emergency situations leading to possible ship abandonment are explained.

    Types of emergencies described should include but not limited to flooding, fire, collision, running aground.

    Emergency duties are described with maritime sector specific examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description should include:
  • That action taken on identifying muster signals is appropriate to the indicated emergency and complies with established procedures.
  • That the timing and sequence of actions is appropriate and minimizes dangers and threats to survival.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The legislated life-saving appliances and equipment carried on ship are described in terms of their purpose, application and operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description should include:
  • Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships.
  • Location of personal life-saving appliances.
  • Equipment contained within various types of survival craft.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Principles concerning survival are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description should include but not be limited to value of training and drills, awareness of potential personal protective clothing and equipment, the need to be ready for any emergency, awareness of potential actions to be taken when called to survival stations, awareness of potential actions to be taken when required to abandon ship, awareness of potential actions to be taken when in the water, awareness of potential actions to be taken when aboard a survival vessel, main dangers to survivors.

    Demonstrate the use of life-saving appliances.

    The use of life-saving appliances is explained with maritime sector specific examples.

    The use of the life-saving appliances is performed in a practical demonstration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for interacting with fellow survivors are explained in terms of the correct fit and use of life-saving resources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Initial actions after leaving the ship and procedures and actions in the water are described with examples that will minimise threats to survival. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate liferaft boarding activities.

    The liferaft boarding activities are described with maritime sector specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dangers of incorrect liferaft boarding are explained with the consequences to all survivors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The liferaft boarding activities are performed in a practical demonstration. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

  • General maritime proactive safety awareness relative to fellow mariners, vessels and environment.
  • An awareness of one's situation at all times utilising all one's senses.
  • To complete this unit standard successfully, learners should have knowledge of ship-board safety procedures and be able to locate and don life jackets and other life saving appliances.
