PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to care for a foal from birth to weaning.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Teaching a foal to accept a halter and lead.
  • Implementing a health care programme for a foal.
  • Feeding a foal to obtain maximum growth potential.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Teach a foal to accept a halter and lead. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The foal is restrained to familiarise it to being handled according to standard stud farm practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The foal is restrained in a halter and taught to obey commands according to standard stud farm practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Commands include, but are not limited to: walk, halt, turn, walk through gates, walk into stable, walk into crush and lift feet.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods to encourage an unresponsive foal to remain calm whilst being led are used according to standard stud farm practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Tail rope and helper.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Implement a health care programme for a foal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need for the foal to receive adequate amounts of colostrum at birth is explained in relation to the consequences to the health and development of the foal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods for parasite control are implemented in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but are not limited to:
  • Wash udder and vulva post foaling, de-worm mare pre foaling and de-worm programme for foal from four weeks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A primary vaccination and booster schedule is drawn up and implemented in accordance with Veterinarian instructions for the prevention of infectious disease. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Teeth of the foal are inspected and their condition is recorded in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hoof problems and leg deviations are described in terms of the benefits of early detection according to stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Problems likely to occur after 12 hours from birth are identified in relation to appropriate interventions in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems include, but are not limited to: retained meconium, infectious diseases, persistent urachus, haemolytic disease and foal heat scours.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Feed a foal to obtain maximum growth potential. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A supplementary feed is selected and introduced according to foal requirements and stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Design and use of creep feeders for foals is described in terms of the purpose and advantages over other feeding methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Creed feeding programme is implemented and monitored to achieve maximum growth potential according to stud farm procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
