PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to recognise and fit as well as reassemble tack:
>Range: Tack includes but is not limited to: saddles, single and double bridles and bits.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying and fitting the different types of bits in common use and explaining their action and effect:
    > Range: Bits are limited to snuffles, pelham`s, curbs.
  • Identifying types, cuts, sizes, condition of saddles, their fitting and related fitting problems.
  • Assembling and fitting a double bridle and curb chain.
  • Assembling and fitting a bit less bridle.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and fit the different types of bits in common use and explain their action and effect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bit types are identified and named from a selection of samples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Bits include but are not limited to:
  • Snaffles, pelhams, curbs and gags.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Action and effect of bit types are described in terms of how they operate in providing control over an equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bit types in common use are fitted with the bridle on the equine according to internationally accepted standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify types, cuts, sizes and condition of saddles and their fitting, as well as related fitting problems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Saddles are identified and named from a selection of samples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Saddles include but are not limited to:
  • General purpose, dressage, jumping, cut back, showing, pony pad, racing, close contact, western and trail.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Saddles are assessed in terms of their quality and condition. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condition includes but is not limited to:
  • Stitching, broken tree, girth points, flocking and material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Girths are identified from a selection of samples and assessed to determine their condition and suitability for a given purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Girth types include but are not limited to:
  • Mohair, string, leather, webbing and nylon.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A girth and the accompanying surcingle is selected and attached to the corresponding saddle from a selection of samples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Saddles and girths are fitted to the equine in accordance with standard operating procedures an are ensured to be suitable for a given purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Common problems when fitting saddles and girths to an equine are discussed in relation to saddle type, saddle size and equine body shape. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assemble and fit a double bridle and curb chain. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The parts of the double bridle are named and assembled in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The double bridle is fitted to the equine according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The action of the curb chain is explained and the curb chain is attached to the bit according to internationally acceptable standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The double bridle is removed from the equine and stored according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of not fitting the double bridle according to accepted standards are explained in terms of the impact on the equine and the rider's ability to control the equine. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Assemble and fit a bit less bridle.

    The parts of the bit less bridle are named and assembled in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The bit less bridle is fitted to the equine according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not fitting the bit less bridle according to accepted standards are explained in terms of the impact on the equine and the rider's ability to control the equine. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 1 qualification in the equine and equestrian field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
