PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is aimed at individuals who are operating as guides in any of the guiding specialisation areas where communication is applied to interpret the environment for tourism customers within a guided experience. The effective application of presentation and communication skills will enhance the experience for customers, leading to a satisfying guided experience, efficient service provision and benefits to the sub-field as a whole.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Prepare an interpretive presentation so as to enhance a Guided experience applicable to own operational area.
  • Deliver a formal interpretive presentation in support of a Guided experience.
  • Maintain interpretive commentary so as to contribute to a Guided experience.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare an interpretive presentation so as to enhance a guided experience applicable to own operational area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Data is gathered as it applies to an identified tourism attraction. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • For tourism attraction includes but is not limited to: a specific place, community, environment, customs, natural and/or cultural heritage, local history, a specific theme as is applicable to a specific guided experience.
  • For data gathering includes but is not limited to: a broad range of resources including printed and electronic media.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Data is consolidated and contextualised so as to prepare for the addressing of both formal and informal information requirements associated with the guiding environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For information requirements includes: formal presentations and the utilisation of information in the informal provision of interpretive commentary and the addressing of questions from a culturally diverse audience.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Provision is made for different cultural interpretation of a site or attraction and its history so as to make provision for a range of different views and cultural differences. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For cultural differences provision includes but is not limited to: respect for the dignity and integrity of people, changing and contested perspectives regarding historical backgrounds to sites, avoiding of stereotyping, avoiding of ill-advised or thoughtless use of words, making provision for multi cultural perspectives and sensitivities.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Deliver a formal interpretive presentation in support of a guided experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An interpretive presentation on a tourism attraction is delivered suited to the audience needs and profile. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For presentation criteria includes but is not limited to: presentation structure, an identifiable theme, sufficient and interesting factual detail and information and anecdotes, keeping to time limitations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Presentation equipment is used effectively in support of a guiding presentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Audience queries applicable to the presentation and guided experience are addressed through the provision of information that reflects broad-minded sensitivity to the requirements, interests and perspectives of culturally diverse tour groups. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The value and impact of a presentation from the perspective of the audience is evaluated so as to address future service delivery in a similar guided experience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain interpretive commentary so as to contribute to a guided experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Informal commentary is provided on aspects of a site visited during a guided experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For aspects of a site includes but is not limited to unobserved issues- including the history, heritage, culture, populations and so forth, directly observed issues, including infrastructure, buildings, landmarks, the environment, natural and cultural surrounds applicable to the site, client specific queries and questions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Informal commentary is provided trough the incorporation of interpretation and communication skills. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For communication and interpretations skills includes but is not limited to: interesting sharing of facts, inclusion of story-telling and anecdotes, educational, relevant and authentic sharing of information, clear audible speech and presentation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Insight and understanding of cultural and natural heritage is demonstrated in the maintaining of interpretive commentary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A broad unbiased perspective is provided in the addressing of audience queries on sensitive matters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to changing and contested perspectives regarding protected areas, national parks and game reserves where these have led to forced removals and alienation from the land, historical battle sites and/or areas where the audience relate differently to aspects of history and local culture, arising disagreements.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements. Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
