This Unit Standard is aimed at individuals involved in the preparation, conducting and conclusion of tourist guiding activities and experiences in a variety of situations in the outdoor environment that needs to respond to weather and other conditions likely to occur in the operational environment.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:

    Similar guiding activities in the category are compared in terms of their applicability.

    Applicability includes but is not limited to difficulty factor, accessibility, teams or individuals, cost factors, possible outcomes.

    Operational instructions are compiled to demonstrate an understanding of the science and technology related to respective guiding activities in the category.

    A legislative framework is compiled that describes the boundaries within which the respective guiding activities in the category may take place.

    Plan and prepare for a specific tourist guiding activity.

    Means to minimise the impact of external influences and hazards on the activity are formulated to ensure safe activity experiences.

    Logistical requirements are identified and complied with according to operational requirements.

    Logistical requirements includes but is not limited to permits, travel arrangements, food, clothing and equipment, indemnities, processing of vouchers and cash transactions.

    The response to the legal requirements for a specific activity is explained in terms of compliance and operational requirements.

    Medical and dietary notes are examined and dealt with according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physical abilities and/or disabilities and the emotional state of participants are reviewed to ensure that the activity is enjoyable and safe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A presentation briefing is compiled to inform participants of the skills and information required to execute the activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An information briefing is presented to the participants regarding the execution of the activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Objectives, procedures and processes for the activity are explained to the participants in preparation to the activity.

  • Procedures include but are not limited to standard and emergency procedures and anticipating unforeseen circumstances.
  • Objectives may include developing mutual trust, support and openness in the group, encouraging participants to reflect on concerns, apprehensions, strengths and weaknesses of the group.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A plan to monitor the progress of the activity is compiled in terms of the status of participants and achievement of the objectives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The plan includes but is not limited to mandatory and ad-hoc monitoring stages in the experience, possible adjustments to the plan, evacuation options.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    External factors are monitored to ensure minimal impact on the environment whilst maintaining the safe conduct of activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Adjustments to the planned proceedings, including stoppages and/or changes to the level of challenge are made in relation to the participants' progress and achievement of the expected outcomes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Progress is communicated to the participants in terms of achieving the objectives of the activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment is monitored for safety and reliability in accordance with organisational policies.

    Feedback on the experience is concluded with the appropriate stakeholders in accordance with organisational policies.
