PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard constitutes one of the main activities of a learner at this level within the automotive components or related environment. The learner will operate a machine either within the manufacturing or assembly departments within this sector. The learner will also monitor both the performance of the machine during the manufacturing or assembly process and the quality of the products or components. The efficient operation of the manufacturing or assembly process depends heavily on the acquisition of the competencies in this Unit Standard.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to planning, operating and monitoring of machine in an automotive components or related environment.
  • Plan to operate machine in an automotive components or related environment.
  • Prepare consumables and machine for use.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The automotive components environment includes both the manufacturing and assembly departments or sections.
  • This Unit Standard is not restricted to the automotive environment. It can be used in any component assembly or manufacturing context.
  • 'Production process' includes both manufacturing and assembly.
  • Monitoring at this level is at the basic level (verification).

    Demonstrate knowledge relating to planning, operating and monitoring of machine in an automotive components or related environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal and specified requirements pertaining to a safe, healthy work environment and the consequences of not adhering to the above are explained in terms of the impact on the business. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of preparing to perform activities is explained in terms of achieving specified manufacturing and/or assembly requirements and up-and downstream operational processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machine to be used is identified and described in terms of the functions it performs and by its various components.

    Only the main components need to be identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The specified actions to be taken in the event of sub-standard conditions and problems pertaining to the machine are explained and necessary actions are performed to deal with the problems in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Problems and/or conditions beyond the scope of the learner are communicated to relevant personnel so that appropriate action can be taken.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions are checked to ensure an effective production process and lack of clarity about the instructions are communicated to supervisor in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instructions are interpreted and activities are planned to ensure an efficient sequence of activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The timing of activities is determined to ensure that the materials are available and the production process is not delayed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare consumables and machine for use. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Preparing equipment includes but is not limited to assembling, attaching, joining, positioning, tightening, filling, adjusting, lubricating, charging and calibrating.
  • Cleaning equipment includes sampling equipment, cutting and shredding equipment, airtools, lifting equipment, conveyor belts, weighing equipment, electrodes, moulds, binding and tying equipment.
  • Consumables include rags, cleaning material, samples, grinding materials, spare electrodes, lubricants, insulation materials, coating material and packaging material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pre-operational checks on machine are performed so that problems can be resolved prior to starting the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Machine is tested and prepared for operation to ensure efficiency the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The availability and condition of consumables required are checked and consumables replenished to prevent delays. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazardous consumables are managed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools required during operation are checked according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Problems with machine and consumables that cannot be immediately resolved are communicated to the supervisor in accordance with organisational requirements so that appropriate action can be taken timeously.

    Operate machine in an automotive components or related environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The machine is operated according to standard operating procedures.

    Standard operating procedure should indicate the interaction between the operator and quality department during the production process.

    The machine is checked during operation and minor adjustments are made or referred to maintenance personnel according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consumption of consumables is monitored and adjustments are made to maintain efficiency of the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Machine is shutdown, cleaned and stored after use to save costs and ensure longevity in terms of use.

    The importance of maintaining quality is explained in terms of both the impact of defective products, materials and components on customers and the financial implications of poor quality for the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems and/or deviations during operation of the machine are identified, recorded and reported according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems pertaining to the product are recorded and reported as soon as possible to maintain the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accurately recording information related to work schedules, activities and equipment in the production process is explained in terms of preventing future breakdowns and delays in production. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information includes incidents, sequence of activities and issues of quality.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Work safely with due care for self, fellow workers, equipment, materials and the environment.

    Mobile equipment, dust, noise, gas, poor visibility, heat, uneven and slippery surfaces, hazardous substances, spillages and fumes.

    Hazardous conditions are identified and reported to appropriate personnel so that the risks can be eliminated or minimised.

    Hazardous materials are identified and dealt with according to standard operating procedures.

    Machines and materials are used according to instructions to eliminate danger to self and fellow workers.

    Personal protective equipment is used as per standard operating procedures.

    The implications of not maintaining a safe working environment are explained in terms of possible loss of life or injury.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
