In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This Unit Standard will enable learners to schedule production activities.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to draw up and apply production schedules if they are given a specific product and process design, a demand forecast, the operations capacity, the operations planning and control system, the performance management philosophy and the performance management system.

The production schedules must:
  • Be viable.
  • Be realistic and achievable.
  • Be efficient and contain an appropriate Level of flexibility.
  • Be aligned with the organisational and operational strategies.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate the key issues involved in scheduling production activities.
  • Apply priority and sequencing rules.
  • Use a variety of scheduling techniques and strategies for managing schedules.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 4.
  • Understanding the supply chain philosophy.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The applied competence expressed in this standard covers the knowledge and understanding of:
  • The range includes (e.g. innovative responses to concrete but sometimes unfamiliar problems, using basic analytical interpretation of information).

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Evaluate the key issues involved in scheduling production activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The concepts of finite and infinite scheduling are analysed to reflect their influence on the scheduling of production activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The difference between finite and infinite scheduling is illustrated to reflect how these concepts are applied within the operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The implications of finite and infinite scheduling are determined as they relate to a particular operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The concepts of backward and forward scheduling are analysed to determine their influence on scheduling production activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The concepts of backward and forward scheduling are evaluated to distinguish them from each other and indicate their implications on the operation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Apply priority and sequencing rules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The terms priority and sequencing rules are defined as per international and national benchmarks.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Various sequencing rules are identified and analysed to determine their impact on the scheduling process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The most appropriate sequencing rules are selected in accordance with the needs of a particular operations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Use a variety of scheduling techniques and strategies for managing schedules.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Includes but is not limited to Pert, Gantt, CPM, Line of Balance and Johnson'Rule.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Different scheduling techniques models are compared to determine the most suitable technique as per operational requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Different scheduling techniques are utilised to reflect their practical application within production scheduling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Techniques are used to manage schedules under a variety of situations.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • Moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in both individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
  • The concepts of shop floor planning and control.
  • How to work with Gantt Charts.
  • The concepts of finite and infinite loading.
  • The concepts of forward and backward scheduling.
  • How to deal with order sequencing problems.
  • How to control changeover costs.
  • How to use scheduling to minimise total production time.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
